The latest figures from the British Cleaning Council (BCC) reveal an unprecedented milestone for the cleaning, hygiene, and waste management industry. In just 12 months, the sector’s value has surged by over 10%, reaching an all-time high of nearly £66.9 billion. This marks a significant rebound following the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw the industry’s contribution dip to £57 billion in 2020 before gradually recovering.

“Our latest research shows that the cleaning, hygiene and waste sector rebounded strongly after the Covid-19 pandemic, to make a record-breaking contribution to the UK economy.” - Delia Cannings, BCC Chair

A Booming Industry with Expanding Opportunities

The cleaning, hygiene, and waste sector is now firmly established as one of the top 10 employers in the UK, with workforce numbers rising from 1.47 million to 1.49 million. This accounts for approximately 5% of the UK workforce, demonstrating just how vital this industry is to businesses, public spaces, and everyday life.

One of the standout findings from the BCC’s research is the steady increase in businesses operating in the sector. Since 2013, when 47,665 companies were active, the number has grown to over 77,535. A remarkable 89% of these businesses are micro-sized, employing fewer than 10 people. This reflects the industry’s adaptability and ongoing demand for professional cleaning and waste management services.

“The industry has maintained its position as one of the ten biggest and most important industries in the UK.” - BCC Research Report
